Character Information

Name: Uchiha Itachi
Canon: Naruto
Journal: [personal profile] dangodragon
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Canon History: Canon History
Canon Abilities/Powers:
Sharingan: In canon Itachi posses the normal Sharingan, and the Mangekyou. The Mangekyou grants him several very powerful justu at the expense of his health and eyesight including the Tuskiyomi, the Amaterasu, and the Susanoo.

Hand-to-hand/weaponry: While it’s obvious that Itachi is excellent at physically fighting, he often hangs back and uses genjutsu of projectiles instead of more violent methods to kill or defeat his opponents. He’s very quick, reading his opponents moves and acting before they can react. He demonstrates a very high accuracy with projectile weapons and uses a sword with competence, though it doesn’t seem to be his favored weapon.

Ninjustu: Itachi excels at water and fire base elemental jutsu. He’s noted for being extremely fast in creating hand signs as well.
Fire: Having been raised by a clan known for their katon, it’s not surprise Itachi relies heavily on them. He’s noted for creating very large and powerful katon and also for hiding projectile weapons on fire.
Sealing: Itachi seals the Amaterasu in moments during his fight with Sasuke, pointing to at least some proficiency in sealing.
Water: Like his katon, Itachi’s uses of suiton are destructive and powerful. He’s also very fond of exploding water clones, because nothing burns like steam and boiling water.

Genjutsu: Much of Itachi’s genjutsu is tied up in his Sharingan and the Mangekyou. However, he doesn’t have to make eye contact with someone to place a genjutsu on them. Drawing their attention to an object, such as his ring, is enough for Itachi. He’s extremely subtle about his genjutsu, often no one realizes he’s placed on on them or that he’s turned their genjutsu around on them.

Summons:It is a little unclear the nature of Itachi’s crows, but they appear to be summons. Itachi relies on his crows heavily, putting the Sharingan in their eyes to allow him to genjutsu people from far away. His clones also often dissolve into crows. His most notable use of a crow was using one to store Shisui’s eye and then hiding the crow inside Naruto until he needed it again.

Sunshineverse History: Itachi grew up the same, a silent little child in the middle of a war. As in canon, the war shaped his dislike of widespread violence. The war also delayed the treatment of a congenital heart defect, one that took the blame for Itachi’s small size, quietness, and apparent dislike of food in the early years of his life. Even after the treatment, Itachi remained small for his age and quiet, preferring the more sedate company of older cousins and relatives to the boisterous play of his peers. The closest friend he had to his age was Uchiha Shisui, who Itachi generally regarded as perpetually at his disposal for securing food, or carrying Itachi around, or whatever else Itachi wanted done. Itachi remained mostly silent, speaking only in whispers, and usually just to Shisui and sometimes select older cousins or his father. Usually he got what he wanted himself or made himself understood with looks. It wasn’t until Itachi’s younger brother Sasuke was born that Itachi began talking in full sentences and mostly out loud, revealing himself to be very clever, instead of unfortunately slow. Sasuke’s birth seemed to be some kind of god given miracle to Itachi, who with a childish superstition, heavily connected Sasuke’s birth to the end of the war.

Without the reinforcing trauma of the Kyuubi attack, Itachi began to grow away from the constant fear of war and death. By six he seemed an entirely different child than the sickly, quiet mouse he’d started as in life. He was still easily winded and didn’t have the stamina or size of most children his age, but he made up for it with his quick mind and reflexes. Itachi had spent most of his life in the company of those older than himself, so being smaller never troubled him, and listening to talk probably too advanced for him had given him better logic than most people his age. Itachi had also been taught to read early by his cousin Shisui, and had been reading scrolls in his father’s library for a while, an activity usually seen as cute instead of remarkable.

Itachi graduated the Academy at seven and was placed on a genin team with genin that had failed their Chuunin exam. Itachi realized he’d been placed with older children who would be more likely to keep him safe, and it pushed him to improve even more than his clan’s already heavy expectations of him. Itachi’s usual training partners were older cousins, most often Shisui, who Itachi stubbornly clung to as his best friend. Itachi held back his team of drop-outs until he passed the Chuunin exam at ten. Itachi’s team was then split up, and Itachi found himself traded from squad to squad as his genjutsu talents or Sharingan were needed. His longest stay with a team was around a year.

Itachi’s first semi-solo mission was the assassination of a ninja who had been targeting Konoha courier-nin and stealing important documents. Itachi went with a squad, but they hung back, afraid that even a hint of ninja activity would have their target fleeing. They assumed since Itachi was young, he would be the most likely to pass without raising suspicion. They followed her through three towns, and the night they intended to kill her, Itachi was surprised to see his cousin Shisui in the same town. Thinking Shisui was passing through on a mission, Itachi asked if he’d seen any sign of their target. Shisui said he hadn’t, but when they later found their target, she was already dead. Itachi, already suspicious of Shisui’s earlier behavior, deduced the work to be Shisui’s. When he came home and eventually discovered Shisui had the Mangekyou and learned of the significance of the new form, he found himself oddly hurt. He was also disappointed Shisui could care so much about the former target, someone intent on harming Konoha. Itachi had mindlessly followed Shisui’s lead before that, believing Shisui to be so much wiser and nigh infallible, but an infraction so large (it seemed to Itachi) and the unexplainable hurt Itachi felt caused a small rift. When they did make up, Itachi was no longer Shisui’s little shadow, but his equal who would question his choices and push him if need be.

Itachi was recommended to Jounin when he was fourteen and a half. He was known for being reliable and quick, often leading missions and recognized as a strong strategic asset. His family was pleased, but had expected him to make Jounin for a few months now. Itachi had been heading a squad of more experienced Chuunin for almost a year before this, and transitioned easily to the higher missions. Despite this, Itachi was surprised to receive a recommendation for ANBU on his sixteenth birthday, one he hesitantly accepted and only after making sure it wouldn’t interfere with his duties as heir.

At first, Itachi was employed in ANBU as a genjutsu specialist on a regular hunter squad, but was quickly taken from that position when it was decided his strengths could be put to better use. Itachi began training to act as one of ANBU’s spy contacts, and if needed, act as a spy himself. Because he had the skills to defend himself if necessary, Itachi was relegated to playing contact for spies undercover as missing-nin. This took him away from home for first weeks at a time, and later even months. Itachi worked well on his own, rarely homesick and actually enjoying the time away from his clan, even though he sometimes worried what they would do without him around.

Travelling exposed a weakness Itachi had only considered inconvenient in the past. Itachi’s immune system was weak. Itachi had always known he was prone to infections and cold took forever to get rid of, but constant exposure to strange and new germs highlighted this. Every sniffle or chill had to be treated aggressively, something Itachi mostly handled on his own to avoid anything going on his health record. He was already on record with a weak heart, something that didn’t cause him any obvious difficulties other than his decreased stamina. Still, Itachi excelled at his missions.

Despite being old enough to move out on his own, Itachi still technically lives at home. It’s easier to keep track of his family and clan that way, as a late breakfast in the kitchen with his mother can have him caught up on all the gossip, and when time is already limited when he’s on break, he doesn’t have to travel to be with family. Itachi also spends a lot of time at his cousin Shisui’s apartment, usually crashing there when he’s too tired or sick to deal with family or simply needs a break.

In recent months, Itachi has realized his health is beginning to break down--not in a way that will affect his performance, but in a way that’s letting him know he won’t be able to perform at peak condition for much longer. For now, Itachi hides it well, not wanting to be removed to lesser duties until his performance suffers.

Sunshineverse Abilities/Powers:
Sharingan:In Sunshine, Itachi doesn’t have the Mangekyou. His Sharingan is limited to being used in more normal genjutsu, copying people’s techniques, and reading their movements. It does give him incredibly good vision, though he tries not to rely on it too much.

Hand-to-hand/weaponry: Having grown up in Konoha where he often spars with a few close cousins and even his brother, Itachi’s hand-to-hand is actually better than it was in canon. In real combat, Itachi still prefers to keep his distance, but he’s not at all opposed to bruising fights with friends just for fun. Itachi remains proficient with projectile weapons and even toyed with the idea of using a bow, but all the trees in Konoha actually make kunai and shuriken better long range weapon choices.

Itachi carries a heavy bladed dagger specifically for close combat. The heavy blade gives his blows more force and is used more for slicing than stabbing. It usually sees service as something easier to black blades with than a kunai. Itachi carries kunai of several different lengths and weights, and the closest thing he has to a hobby of collecting different kinds of shuriken of different sizes, shapes, and different metals.

Ninjustu:
Fire: Katon are still Itachi’s go-to elemental justu, used most often when he’s not on an ANBU mission. Generally he uses smaller, more controlled katon to avoid burning allies or starting any forest fires.
Sealing: Having a love of projectile weapons means one needs a way to carry them. Itachi is always experimenting with new seals and new ways to seal things. It’s not uncommon for him to, on a break from missions, be found liberally splattered in ink.
Water: Itachi’s more fond of water clones than shadow clones, though having water near is a prerequisite for larger jutsu. Itachi’s usually less refined with these, as he’s not so worried about mass destruction and focuses more on power. He’s also found of combining water and fire too create devastating effects, such as exploding water clones or water and fire to create steam or simply boiling water.

Genjutsu: Without the Mangekyou to rely on, Itachi still excels in genjutsu. His chakra control and Sharingan give him an edge, and his ability to manipulate people helps. Itachi prefers to be minimalistic in his genjutsu, using either scent or sound to suggest what he wants someone to think or feel. He’s also found of very slowly drawing someone into a genjutsu, altering reality in small fragments until his victim is completely lost in whatever world Itachi has created for them.

Summons:Itachi’s crows still have the same capabilities as they have in canon, but Itachi uses them a little differently. Few people actually know he has a summoning contract with crows. While on ANBU missions he sometimes uses the crows as messenger birds. For short time the crows can be disguised with a henge, though crows are common enough they rarely excite attention.

Other: As he is often undercover, Itachi had become very proficient in using a henge to disguise himself and more mundane ways when he doesn’t want to waste chakra or risk anyone seeing through a henge. In his earlier years as a spy, Itachi could pass himself off as a slightly older woman fairly easily, though now he usually sticks to male personas. When acting a as contact for other spies, Itachi usually assumes a guise easily and unsuspiciously approached. He might choose a beggar so reports could either be placed in his begger’s bowl or thrown at him, or a travelling salesman or even on a few occasions a prostitute. His favorite role is that of a travelling scribe or priest, as his hands are usually ink stained anyway.

Appearance: Itachi is unfortunately pretty. Long hair, long eyelashes, and refined features are not exactly the most intimidating combination. Surely his parents would have liked him to be a little more brawny and physically intimidating, but, alas, they have to settle for pretty.

Itachi is five ten and around one hundred thirty pounds, give or take. If he’s been sick or running a hard or long mission, he tends to drop a few pounds and usually gains weight back when home. This gives Itachi a very lean frame with ropy muscles instead of bulk. He’s long limbed with long, thin hands and feet, which means he usually has a terrible time keeping his hands warm and is well-known in his family for perpetually cold hands.

Itachi dresses comfortably when he’s not in uniform. He prefers loose clothing in darker colors. His hair is usually pulled back in a low ponytails, though sometime he braids it. If he’s not actually doing anything more than reading or visiting, he might leave his hair down, but that requires an army of clips and hair pins to keep it more or less contained.

Personality: First, Itachi is the Uchiha heir, carefully correct without being at all a pushover. Itachi is very duty bound to his clan and his village and takes pains to present himself to people as the ideal heir or ninja. It’s his way of not disgracing either clan or village with personal ideas that might not line up with their ideology, or not disgracing anyone with annoying personal quirks or comments. It’s also a shield for him to hide behind and observe people. It makes him less vulnerable to other people reading him as he reads other people when he simply puts up a front. Itachi is always more at ease playing a well defined role rather than acting from his heart or impulses. This makes him a good spy, as he can easily assume another roll and follow the rules of it without much trouble.

Itachi posses a very specialized sort of intelligence that has always been geared towards combats and dissecting people. Itachi has no real hobbies or serious pastimes beyond his duties, so every spare moment is usually poured into honing his skills, and thus his mind is keyed towards combat and life or death situations and politics.

Itachi can count his close friends on one hand, and none of them aren’t related to him. He has a few acquaintances he might eat with or go out with among his ninja comrades, but most of them know him in a more superficial way. Itachi has a very difficult time being emotionally intimate with anyone, and even those he’s close to sometimes get more of whatever role Itachi thinks they want or need. As mentioned, Itachi is very duty bound and tries to fulfill people’s expectations. It’s another almost defense. If he does what people expect, they don’t often look to closely at him or ask too many questions.

While Itachi does prefer to perform as expected, he won’t bend his principles for other people. There’s very little he won’t do for his clan or his village, though he’s very carefully made it obvious he won’t put his clan ahead of his loyalties to the village.

Itachi does have a temper. Only certain topics can get it to flare up, and those who make him mad will rarely know it at the time. Itachi prefers to act in calm, almost cold logic, and will sometimes refrain from taking any action if he knows he’s emotionally aroused. Itachi’s more likely to report problematic behavior to his superiors discretely rather than challenge someone himself. Unless he feels his reputation can carry enough weight with those involved to keep things from coming to blows or hurt feelings, he usually leaves things to people with actual authority. When it comes to his family, however, Itachi is very certain of his place and his authority there. He avoids being belligerent with people who disagree with him, but he is very firm and will pull aside an Uchiha to reprimand them if he thinks they need it.

Generally, Itachi is silent but genial enough to people, unless he’s very tired. If he’s very tired Itachi is less likely to engage in conversation, and people usually give up on talking to him very quickly. Itachi does like talking to new people and asking them questions. He’s very inquisitive about other people’s hobbies, having none of his own. Itachi doesn’t usually strike up random conversations with someone unless he needs something, but he’s willing to carry on conversations other people start, and he’s moderately good with politely clearing awkward silences.

However, Itachi’s very close relationships are often a little...tumultuous. While Itachi is very good at playing roles and following the rules of those roles, he’s not very good off script. When people expect him to be honest and real with no role, Itachi’s often blunt, irritable, and often puts his feet in his mouth. He’s very perceptive and doesn’t have a good sense of when honesty is s a little too honest. He has a very hard time with relationships when they change. He’ll cling to the old methods and rituals for far too long or stumble into an awkwardly constructed role that usually feels distant to someone who is used to being close to him.

Itachi greatly dislikes being touched. He’ll go out of his way to avoid touching strangers and always avoids crowds. A friendly pat on the back is usually met with a deadpan look that suggests the person never do that again if they like life. Itachi only graciously accepts touch from those he’s very close to, and only really enjoys physical contact from Sasuke and Shisui. His rampant dislike of being touched adds to his reputation as being a formidable and slightly terrifying ninja.

Itachi is vain about his hair. He could care less about what the rest of him looks like as long as he doesn’t smell, but he’s very particular about his hair, though he tries not to seem like he is. He hates having it pulled. Any hair pulling, no matter how playful or innocent, will be met with a serious intent to harm.

While Itachi hates large scale conflict, he does enjoy sparring. He takes an almost guilty delight in being good at what he does, and spars with people he knows can turn near deadly. Itachi is fast and accurate and relishes a challenge. Itachi will do just about anything to avoid a war again. He doesn't mind at all being used if it means there will be peace.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
+Itachi is a known and vaunted genius when it comes to being a ninja.
+He’s excellent at lying and manipulating people.

-His immune system sucks.
-He sees himself as a tool to be used first and a human being second.
-He sees himself as expendable, and causes a lot of people who care about him grief.
-He takes too much on his own shoulders, which can lead to trouble.

Dual
-From his nightmare disturbed sleep patterns as a child, Itachi is an insomniac. This means he can work forty-eight hours straight, but also means when he gets into a can’t-sleep groove, he can become useless. He only sleeps soundly at home in his own bed or whenever Shisui is around to watch his back.

Village Affiliation: Konoha
Rank: Jounin and ANBU

Prose sample: The wonderful Obito/Itachi thread from the testdrive.

Bracket sample: [Itachi has broken no less than three fingers on one hand, which he regrets because those hands already hurt in the morning, and he knows breaking them won’t help that. He can’t be bothered to regret it too much as he looks over the battlefield, mouth dry and mind trying to skitter back to the horror that was the War. It’s not the same, he calmly insists to himself as he begins moving among the dead to make sure they are dead. It’s nothing like the same, even if it smells the same and tastes the same in the back of his throat.]

They’re all dead.

[It’s a general statement, and Itachi wipes the blood from his face, feeling a stinging cut above his eyebrow where someone tried to take out his eye. They always go for the eyes, as if he would be suddenly impotent if they took the Sharingan from him. Itachi feels his lips curl, wanting to laugh a little, but he’d freak out the Chuunin he’s shepherding on this mission, so he seals it behind pursed lips and goes on, silent as death itself in a field of slaughter.]

Missive Sample:
Official:
Hokage-Sama

All objectives were accomplished satisfactorily. Hawk took an injury to his left arm, which is his dominant hand, and I would advise he be placed on medical leave to avoid permanent damage. The medic who looked at him after the mission agreed, though I would add a week to what was suggested. I recommend Mouse be considered for a captain, and think Snake should be discharged soon. I do not doubt his abilities, but the missions seem to take a heavier toll on him than seems safe, especially if they involve children.

Personal:
Shisui,

Please stop sending me pornographic love letters while I am in the field. It’s not funny. Okay, everyone but me thinks it’s funny, and I am going to gouge out my eyes if you inspire me to think of even one more inappropriate image involving the two of us. Stop. Better yet, get a girlfriend and stop. Remember that I know where you sleep and think deeply on what will happen if you keep irritating me, dearest cousin.
